Our project restores and reinterprets one of the most striking monuments of the Kiev Art Nouveau — “House with Snakes”. We sought to preserve its uniqueness and at the same time integrate modern solutions that make the space functional and relevant. Therefore, we chose the approach of restomod (restoration + modification): preservation of historical aesthetics with the addition of high-tech solutions. This is how the dialogue of the past and the present is born, where cultural heritage gets a new life.
The architecture of the building is saturated with floral and zoomorphic motifs that personify natural elements. We have continued this symbolism in the inner space: each floor recreates the character of Earth, Water or Air, smoothly passing from one element to another, creating a sense of movement and harmony. The symbols of the house give special meaning: snakes as a sign of wisdom and protection and chestnuts as an integral symbol of Kiev. In the center of the composition is the mirror interactive cube of the reception — a modern accent that reflects the architecture and the visitors themselves, emphasizing the main idea of modern: “man is the crown of creation”.
In working with materials, the IQOSA team preserved the layering of time, allowing stories to sound through textures. The ceilings combine restored stucco decor and modern lighting installations. The walls reveal aged surfaces and frescoes, adding depth to the space. The floors are made of terrazzo and marble with inlays of metallic elements in the form of plant motifs and chestnuts, reminiscent of the heredity of identity.
Renovation is not limited to restoration — it opens new life to buildings. In 2025, the restoration of the “House with Snakes” is of particular importance for Ukraine. This is not only the preservation of the architectural heritage, but also the affirmation of the cultural resilience of the country, which is going through difficult tests. By bringing historical monuments back to life, we demonstrate the ability not only to build the future, but also to preserve the past.
“House with snakes” in the IQOSA project reappears in Kyiv as a place where history meets the future, and modern takes on a new sound.
